 I hope all of you have had a lovely week full of exciting things. I have two huge projects that I am working on; putting away the Christmas decorations and taxes (ugh!). These are certainly two giants looming over me!

 

Speaking of which, a friend had asked me an intriguing question and thus it became our topic for the next few weeks is; Did the giants in the bible really exist?

First let’s take a look at extra-biblical accounts. There have been dozens of references to and pictures of giant human skeletons. But are they real? That is a loaded question. “Scores of giant skeletons have been allegedly unearthed in the past couple of centuries. These claims were especially popular in the nineteenth century. So far, no concrete evidence of these claims has been brought forth. Although some claim the evidence was ignored, destroyed, or hidden by places like the Smithsonian, it seems more likely that the vast majority of these reports were hoaxes created for various reasons.”¹

And of course in these modern times, computers can doctor photos and the internet can create a rash of “evidence”. Pictures of people who are standing next to or holding giant human bones have long been available to the general public for inspection. And take a look-they do appear real! However all of these bones are sculptures of replicas of an alleged real bone found in Turkey or Greece. But, as mentioned above, the original bone can’t be located. It seems there is no real evidence to support such claims.

Tim Chaffey of Answers in Genesis has extensively looked into the subject of giant humans. He states in his article Giants in the Old Testament, “…human fossils are quite rare altogether, since humans are more capable of avoiding rapid burial in sediment and other conditions that could lead to fossilization of their remains.”² What he does point out, quite logically, is the many other giant forms found in the animal kinds. He lists twenty two giant forms of extant and extinct animals including, giant sloths, beaver, crocodiles, frogs, fish, squid, crustaceans, insects, and worms. This is significant because animals with body sizes far greater than those observed today make it clear that there is a possibility giant humans lived in the past, just as the Bible states. Other than this circumstantial evidence, is there any other extra-biblical evidence related to giant humans?

 

A recent discovery in Peru of a mummy may be that of a giant toddler. The toddler’s skull is twenty inches in height, which is much larger even than any modern adult human skull.  We know, however it is a toddler by certain characteristic features that only children less than two years of age display. One such feature is the fontanelle, the soft spot on a baby’s head. This spot allows the skull plates to pass through the birth canal, and the Peruvian toddler mummy still contains the fontanelle. There are other features however that are a little more difficult to explain. For example, note the large eye sockets and unusual chin in the photo. There has been some speculation that the toddlers abnormality may have been caused by disease or ritual skull manipulation. No single explanation seems to satisfy this child’s unusual features.

So, of course, others have postulated the mummy is a discovery of the existence of aliens. But be reassured, the Bible provides solid reasons against such evidence (another future topic for my blog!). And even secular sources are crying hoax about such alien speculation in relation to this mummy. Scientists are now running DNA tests to verify the humanity of the specimen (presumably to preclude it from being an alien). The exciting part about all of this is that so far, there seems to be little doubt that the specimen itself is genuine.

And this toddler would have been birthed by a human woman. A large human woman. A giant…

Looking to the night skies: “Friday, January 18. First-quarter Moon. The Moon is exactly half lit at 6:45 p.m. EST. In early evening, look above the Moon by about a fist-width at arm's length for the brightest two or three stars of Aries. These are aligned more or less vertically.”³
And for all of you in the southern hemisphere, “Venus is in the final stages of its latest morning display as it draws back towards the Sun. In the early days of the month [January] it can be glimpsed shortly before dawn at magnitude -3.9, but by the end of January it will be drowned in the glare of dawn.”⁴
